Choosing the Right Care Category: Older Person Care & Younger Adult Care
Care homes listing their services on carehome.co.uk can select Older Person Care, Younger Adult Care, or both. Selecting the right category ensures care seekers find homes that match their needs and prevents unsuitable enquiries.
This guide explains when to choose each option.
What is Older Person Care?
Older Person Care is for care homes that primarily support adults aged 65+ or those with age-related conditions.
You should select Older Person Care if your home:
- Primarily admits residents aged 65+
- Provides care for age-related conditions such as dementia or general old age care
- Will admit younger residents (typically 40+) who have conditions linked to old age, such as early-onset dementia
Example: A care home that states its minimum age as 50+ and primarily supports residents with dementia should select Older Person Care, as these residents are likely seeking care typically associated with later life.
What is Younger Adult Care?
Younger Adult Care is for care homes that specialise in supporting adults aged 18-65 with specific care needs.
You should select Younger Adult Care if your home:
- Primarily admits adults aged 18-65
- Specialises in non-age-related conditions such as:
- Learning disabilities
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Sensory impairments
- Mental health conditions
- Physical disabilities
Example: A care home catering for younger adults with learning disabilities (aged 18-50) should select Younger Adult Care because it provides specialist support unrelated to ageing.
Can a Care Home Offer Both?
Some care homes provide both Older Person Care and Younger Adult Care, typically when they have separate wings or units for different age groups.
You should select both if your home:
- Supports both younger adults (18-65) and older adults (65+)
- Has specialist services for younger adults alongside general residential/nursing care for older people
Example: A care home that admits younger adults with physical disabilities and older adults with dementia should select both categories to ensure care seekers find the right service.
How Does This Affect Search Results?
Care seekers using our website and The Care Help Team use filters to find homes that match their needs. If you don’t select the correct care type:
1. You may miss out on relevant enquiries from care seekers
2. Your home may receive unsuitable enquiries that don’t align with your services
By selecting the right option, you help the right people find your home quickly and easily.
If you’re unsure, contact your Account Manager or email customerservices@carehome.co.uk for guidance.
